Anjali Singhal

I was born and brought up in India. I received my B.Tech. degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur in 2007. Thereafter I moved to the United States to pursue my Ph.D. here at Northwestern University.

My current research focuses on skeletal tissue mechanics, in particular the bone.  At the engineering level, bone is a nanoparticulate reinforced composite, with a complex hierarchical structure, which transfers load between the stiff organic particles through shearing in the intervening soft organic layers. A detailed study of the deformation mechanisms at the various hierarchical levels of the bone structure, and response of bone to load in wet and dry environments, can be useful for a variety of medical applications like design of artificial implants and investigating diseases like osteoporosis. I use the synchrotron  X-ray radiation at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to study the stress-strain behavior.
