Bone resorption events and consequent failure of titanium implants are frequently related with stress shielding problems due to a stiffness mismatch with respect to bone. This is an incompatible mechanical problem that is difficult to solve because of the highly anisotropic nature of the biomechanical systems to be replaced, as is the case with dental implants. My objective is to design, process, and characterize cylindrical titanium samples with longitudinally and radially-graded porosity obtained by conventional powder metallurgy and space holder techniques. The design concept is biomimetic-like. Our results of mechanical strength were reasonably suitable for dental applications and indicated that it is possible to obtain a desired longitudinal gradient in the Young's modulus. I would like to implement the technique of freeze-casting to this research during my visit to Northwestern University, and further progress in this area
