Plastic deformation and fracture of materials, emphasizing structure/property relations. Role of imperfections, state of stress, temperatures, strain-rate, environment on mechanical behavior of metals, polymers and ceramics are examined.
The class is divided into project teams of 4-5 students, and each team is assigned to one project representing a complete investigation of the mechanical behavior of a pair of material. The project extends over the entire quarter and involves several types of mechanical measurements, as well as specimen preparation, microstructure observation, and prototype development
